"More Than Baseball and Beer" Boston Arts Festival 2009
“More than Baseball and Beer”: Boston Arts Festival 2009

Boston- Noon Sunday, September 13, 2009
As Boston residents most of us, myself included, forget there is a life outside of Fenway Park. This pretains especially to mid September when we’re gearing up for playoffs and watching every crack of the bat.
Maybe this is why in September of 2003 Mayor Menino created the Boston Festival for the Arts. To remind the world, to remind ourselves we are educated young involved citizens who can do more than sit at bars with pitchers spilling in front of us yelling at tv screens.
Even though the Sox were not only home Sunday September 13th, but also played a double header there was a solid turnout at the festival, affectionately called “ahts.”

Marie DAngelo talks of how she had to drag her husband away from the tv. “He’s got his fingers glued to the blackberry checking the score, but at least I got him out of the house.” Her husband was also the only one around sporting a Sox hat.Marie did better than Boston University Senior Jamie Collum at convincing their significant others to join them. “I tried to get him to come,” Collum said of her boyfriend, “but he was already comfy on the sofa with a budlight.”
“It was a nice change from Boston’s usual Baseball and Beer,” Theresa Gorman said. “Sometimes we forget that more goes on in this city.” Gorman, a Boston University Senior had gone to support Marie Gavin, a family friend.
Gavin’s stall was one of the most popular at the festival, and a personal favorite. With eclectic headbands and neon hats it was a Halloween costume paradise. And there was not one Red Sox anything visible. Boston Arts Festival 2 from sarah gordon on Vimeo.
While the Red Sox are held as holy grail in Boston, it's nice to remember the other great things about our city. The harbor showcases a different kind of green than the green monster, that of green grass. "Sweet Caroline," was not heard once, instead the sounds of homegrown rock poured over speakers. The cobblestones of Christopher Colombus Park are a bit cleaner than the crowded streets of Landsdowne. Athletes wear tights paired with leotards instead of striped shirts. Lastly, hats can be adorned with neon feathers instead of the stereotypical sock. For a few hours one Sunday it was a welcome break. And we still made it home for the second game.
